1. Youth Education and Movement on HIV/AIDS :
Thailand’s Experience
Course Orientation
Whilst the pandemic it’s entering its third decade, HIV/AIDS is no longer regarded only as a health problem to be solved through a purely biomedical approach, but as an issue that affects all aspects of a society. The complexities of the HIV/AIDS have evidenced the need to tackle the problem through a multi-disciplinary. Undoubtedly, young people are at persistent risk for HIV infection. However, research from around the world shows an alarming degree of misinformation and lack of knowledge about HIV/AIDS among young people. The majority lack access to effective prevention education, while many cannot access condoms. Furthermore, one global study showed that 44 out of 107 countries failed to include AIDS in their school curricula, As well as, the application of HIV/AIDS education for specific group such as youth been often forgotten in the design of applicable s in understanding the problem. Although young people are especially vulnerable to HIV, they have enormous potential for changing the causes of the epidemic. A dynamic youth movements against AIDS launched a campaign on abstinence and on delaying the initiation of sex, these are considered as continual HIV prevention outreach and education efforts. HIV/AIDS education needs to take place at correspondingly young ages, before young people engage in sexual behaviours that put them at risk for HIV infection. It has shown that a large proportion of young people are not concerned about becoming infected with HIV. Adolescents need accurate, age-appropriate information about HIV infection and AIDS, including how to talk with their partners to reduce risk, and where to get tested for HIV. Obviously, most managers, health workers and policy makers are unaware of the application that HIV/AIDS education for youth is contributing factors in driving the most projects, policies and s designed for HIV/AIDS campaign. Although knowledge in understanding the mechanisms of how youth movement and socio-cultural determinants play in creating barriers and impact on HIV/AIDS has risen, very little efforts have been made to operationalize this knowledge. International population policies have shifted their focus from family planning and population targets to the enhancement of reproductive health. Reproductive health encompasses a set of health problems or diseases associated with the physical and social risks of human sexuality and reproduction. The goal of reproductive health care is to enable women, men and adolescents to regulate their own fertility safely and effectively by conceiving when they desire, terminating unwanted pregnancies safely and carrying wanted pregnancies to term; to remain free of diseases, disabilities or death associated with reproduction and sexuality; and to bear and raise healthy children. 3. Applied Health Research
Course Orientation :
Socio-cultural and economic factors are some of the key determinants which provide strategies to solve problems related to health systems. Managers of health care s need to be able to use a full range of quantitative and qualitative research approaches and methods in order to implement successful strategies. However qualitative methods can provide mechanisms and strategies that could lead to a successful reorientation of health s by understanding the context and the actual needs of the target group.
This course will examine briefly both strengths and weaknesses of qualitative and quantitative approaches providing participants with an understanding of the basic techniques. In depth understanding of applied qualitative research methodologies will be provided to give an insight into the user-prospective of health care. Key health and health care aspects will be analysed such as how to achieve quality of care, use and distribution of pharmaceuticals, coping with chronic illnesses, drug and alcohol abuse, transmission and prevention of HIV/AIDS, adolescent sexuality and, culture and mental health.
